Developing Transit Talent Pipelines
Our latest report examines transit workforce challenges through the lens of bus mechanics and maintenance workers, positions that are essential to helping agencies transition to zero-emissions buses and restoring pre-pandemic service. Retirements and attrition coupled with a changing labor market means that agencies can no longer count on a steady pipeline of people for these positions. To build durable pipelines of workers now and into the future, the report finds that agencies must take steps to more actively engage with potential workers and encourage them to join the transit workforce. They must also identify new methods to prepare these workers for entry into the field and to retrain current workers to meet current and future needs. With greater investment from transit agencies, state and federal government, and philanthropy, we can ensure that transit jobs are high-quality, competitive green jobs that attract the necessary talent.
