The False Spectre of Urban Highway Removal

Lessons from Dr. Noh

Between 2003-2005, the Cheonggyecheon Highway was removed from the center of Seoul and replaced with a restored stream and park. The project reintroduced an important space for people in the heart of the city and marked a new emphasis on public space in South Korean urban planning.

Dr. Soo Hong Noh, an environmental engineer who was one of the key actors in Cheonggyecheon’s transformation, joined TransitCenter to give an overview of the project’s history and discuss his role in building the grassroots support needed to realize such a bold transformation.
