When Albany lawmakers approved congestion pricing earlier this year, they also mandated a “reorganization” of the MTA on a quick timetable. By June, the consulting firm AlixPartners released a sweeping but not very detailed draft reorganization plan for the largest agency in the state. And at the end of July, the MTA Board approved the draft plan.
While it’s generally agreed that the MTA should be better run, restructuring an agency of such vital importance also carries significant risk. What should transit riders make of this plan? Does it slice through red tape or generate more bureaucratic complexity? Which aspects of the AlixPartners recommendations are worth keeping and which should be tossed?
