Equity in Transit: Internal Practices and Equitable Outcomes

In September, TransitCenter and CNT released “Equity in Practice: A Guidebook for Transit Agencies.” The report examines how transit agencies can reform internal practices to deliver better outcomes for the people with the most at stake in transit – low-income riders, riders of color, and frontline transit workers.
To make transit work for people who have been marginalized, transit agencies must embed equity in the full sweep of their activities. Lasting impact comes from institutionalizing equity as a value across all agency functions – from setting budgets to developing the workforce to managing day-to-day operations.
How can transit agency leadership and staff support a culture that makes continual progress toward equity? Which internal agency processes should be restructured to achieve equitable outcomes for riders and workers? What should agency leaders do to shift power to the people most affected by their decisions?
