This talk is part of TransitCenter’s “Transit and COVID-19: The Online Event Series”

A growing number of transit agencies and private mobility firms are creating staff positions dedicated to “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” (DEI). In ordinary circumstances, these jobs have a range of responsibilities, from reforming internal hiring practices to developing best practices in community engagement. But as the transit industry responds to the COVID-19 crisis, there’s an opportunity to expand the role of these positions.

Data shows that a majority of the essential workers who continue to rely on transit are people of color, many of whom are now experiencing crowded, dangerous conditions on their commutes. Given that equity should be centered in response to the crisis, is there a larger role for DEI officers to play in transit’s recovery? How can these roles influence the industry to adopt a more equitable framework for transportation investments and public planning processes?

Join TransitCenter and panelists working in DEI roles across the country for a discussion about how organizations can position these roles for success and fulfill the promise of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
