How does the might of the car impinge on one’s right to the city? Join TransitCenter for a conversation with professors Kafui Attoh and Greg Shill about the political and legal barriers to freely navigating our cities without a car.
In his book Rights in Transit, Attoh draws from struggles over bus service cuts in Oakland to illustrate how the absence of a “right in transit” violates the democratic promise of access to civic life. In a complementary vein, Shill’s work explores how the American legal system privileges driving implicitly and explicitly across nearly every facet of law, with serious consequences for society and the environment.
Expect a lively discussion about the obstacles to car-free transportation and how to better assert the right to freedom of movement in cities.
