Making the MTA Subway System Accessible to All New Yorkers
Nearly 30 years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers continue to be denied access to the city’s subway system every day. Today, TransitCenter launched a campaign, “Access Denied,” calling on Governor Cuomo and the MTA to provide reliable, stair-free access to NYC’s subway system. The campaign pushes for a drastic reduction in elevator breakdowns and a substantial increase in station elevators throughout the subway system, and puts these issues squarely on Governor Cuomo’s and Chairman Lhota’s agendas as they develop plans to improve MTA performance. The MTA’s failure to address these issues affects people with disabilities, parents with strollers, travelers, and the rapidly increasing population of older New Yorkers. At some point, this problem will affect every New Yorker.
Join TransitCenter and Monica Bartley of The Center for Independence of the Disabled, Gary Talbot with Amtrak, and State Assemby Member Jo Anne Simon to discuss the consequences of inaction and to look at what other big cities are doing to provide an inclusive transit system.
