The Near-Miss Project & Cycling Cities

The Latest Research on Bicyclist Safety from the UK & US.

Across race and gender, feeling unsafe on the road is the biggest reason why people don’t use bicycles for urban travel. The latest research from Britain and the United States finds that safety problems from crashes to the psychological impact of ‘near misses’ significantly reduce willingness to cycle. But where high-quality cycling facilities are implemented, bike use rises substantially.

Co-hosted by Transportation Alternatives and the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), this event will explores how recent cycling research can inform how cities make streets safer for everyone on a bike. It will feature presentations by Rachel Aldred, Reader in Transport at the University of Westminster, and Kate Fillin-Yeh, Strategy Director at NACTO, and commentary by Caroline Sampanaro, Deputy Director of Transportation Alternatives.
